Book bags: We are still missing a handful of book bags. Please let me know if you are unable to locate your child’s book bag and I can email you the cost to replace it.

Home Folders: Please have your child bring their Home Folder into school, as usual, on Tuesday. I will be collecting them so that they can be reused next school year.

Library Books: Please send any library books you still have at home with your child. Volunteers will be working on re-shelving the books next week and we can collect any funds for books that were lost.

Summer Learning Opportunities: Here are some resources for summer learning from the Kent ISD along with different summer programs for children.

WEEK AT A GLANCE

Literacy Workshop

Narrative Writing/Phonics: We’ve been continuing to try out craft moves from our favorite series writers. We’ve also been paying attention to when writers use capital letters.

  • Names of people and places

  • The word I

  • Dates

  • The start and end of letters

  • The start of a sentence

We’ve been on the lookout in our own writing to see if a word needs a capital or not.

Reading: Next week we will focus on finding the life lesson that books teach us. These are lessons that are general (not specific) so that we can take them with us and use them in our own lives. Here are some examples:

  • “Be Honest” (Ruthie and the Not So Teeny Tiny Lie)

  • “Stick Together” (Iris and Walter and the Field Trip)

  • “Be Yourself” (Ruby the Copycat)

  • “Talk It Out” (Poppleton)

  • “Never Talk to Strangers” (Little Red Riding Hood)

Math

This week we investigated some of the ways we’ve changed and grown since birth. We compared and measured length in nonstandard units and used various strategies to find differences between pairs of lengths.

WEEK AT A GLANCE ELA : Not only are our nonfiction texts full of longer and harder words, but also expert words that pertain to the topic we’re reading about. We discussed how it’s important not to just breeze past these words, but to stop and think about what these words actually mean.  We’ve also been getting to know some common phonograms that end in blends ( -ump, -ock, -ash, -unk, -ack, -uck, -ing, -ish ) Knowing these endings helps us to recognize the ending as a “part” and not just isolated sounds.
