Narrative Writing Celebration

IMPORTANT INFORMATION

Field Trips: We will be taking five field trips this year, GRPS Planetarium, Forest Hills Performing Arts Center, Recycling Center, Van Andel Institute, and the Celebration Cinema IMAX. If you would like to volunteer to drive for any of the field trips, please complete this sign-up.  All parents will have the opportunity to join us on May 17th for the Celebration Cinema field trip. I will send out a separate form for this field trip in the spring.

Our first field trip will be to the Grand Rapids Public Museum’s Planetarium on the morning of November 7. Please be sure that you’ve filled out a volunteer consent form if you plan on driving for this field trip.

Classroom Volunteers: Its officially time I ask for help. :) I would love help preparing for upcoming math units and projects. Please sign-up here if you would be willing to volunteer in the classroom. Thank you in advance for your help.

Halloween: On Tuesday, October 31, please send your child to school dressed in regular school clothes, as our celebration will be held in the afternoon. The school parade will take place outside at 2:15. Parties will immediately follow. Below are some reminders as you start thinking about costumes.
  • Students should plan on slipping on costumes over their clothes. Students need to do this independently.
  • Please remember no full face masks, face paint, make-up, blood, or weapons.

WEEK AT A GLANCE

Reading/Word Study: We kicked off our new reading unit called “Word Detectives” this week! We have been getting missions from the “SSDA” (Super Secret Detective Agency) So far our missions have included:
  • Noticing when there is a problem and stopping to solve it
  • Looking closely at a word from start to end!
  • Using everything we know
In phonics we have continued our detective work by trying to solve the Case of the Silent E! So far in our casefile we’ve collected the following evidence:
  • The E is at the end of the word
  • The E Doesn’t make a sound
  • It changes the vowel to it’s long sound (but watch out for words like “have” where it doesn’t work this way)

Unit 2 Snap Words (bolded words have been taught): big, eat, make, out, take, have, came, same, home, more, not, of, put, your, I’m, into, little, now, three, if

Writing: We started writing “How-To” books this week! We brainstormed many ideas of things that we know a lot about and can teach others. Ask your child about some of the things they’re planning on teaching others to do. We will be studying lots of “How-To” mentor texts to see what craft moves we can mimic in our own writing.

SEL Lesson: In this week’s lesson, your child will practice using body language and context clues (looking at the person’s face and body, thinking about what’s going on in the situation) to figure out how someone is feeling.

Try This at Home: Ask your child to tell you how they think others around them might be feeling, for example a sibling, or a character in a story, a movie, or a TV show.

Math: This week our focus was on counting by 5s and 10s to become more efficient at counting amounts larger than 10. We used “five-armed sea stars” as a context for counting and worked together to make a quilt that exemplifies the counting by 5s pattern in a variety of ways.

WEEK AT A GLANCE ELA : Not only are our nonfiction texts full of longer and harder words, but also expert words that pertain to the topic we’re reading about. We discussed how it’s important not to just breeze past these words, but to stop and think about what these words actually mean.  We’ve also been getting to know some common phonograms that end in blends ( -ump, -ock, -ash, -unk, -ack, -uck, -ing, -ish ) Knowing these endings helps us to recognize the ending as a “part” and not just isolated sounds.
