WEEK AT A GLANCE

Literacy Workshop

Opinion Writing: We continued to use our “shoebox collections” this week. We worked on making our writing more convincing by quoting experts (our classmates and teachers) and anticipating disagreement and coming up with a counter-argument

Reading/Phonics: We’ve been learning all about how vowel-teams work. We’ve been studying words with EE, EA, AI, OA, AY, and OU. The first five listed all make one VOWEL sound (usually the long vowel sound) and OU makes a whole new sound altogether! Help your child use this tool when they read at home-BUT…to also try the vowel sound in the vowel team many ways if it doesn’t work the first time. There are always those outliers (ex: bread, great, head, etc.)

We’ve been practicing hearing these sounds and using these patterns as we write words, as well.

Math

We have continued to work on story problems using addition and subtraction strategies within 20. Some of these strategies include:

Addition Strategies

  • Combinations of 10

  • Add 10

  • Add Nine

  • Doubles

Subtraction Strategies

  • Take Away

  • Count Up (finding the difference)

  • Using a Familiar Addition Fact

WEEK AT A GLANCE ELA : Not only are our nonfiction texts full of longer and harder words, but also expert words that pertain to the topic we’re reading about. We discussed how it’s important not to just breeze past these words, but to stop and think about what these words actually mean.  We’ve also been getting to know some common phonograms that end in blends ( -ump, -ock, -ash, -unk, -ack, -uck, -ing, -ish ) Knowing these endings helps us to recognize the ending as a “part” and not just isolated sounds.
