IMPORTANT INFORMATION

Fun Day:

Lakeside Fun Day: Friday, May 24 is Lakeside Fun Day!

  • Clothing:  Some of the planned activities do involve water. Your child may only wear their suit to school if they have clothes over it. Modest bathing suit attire is requested.

  • Sunscreen:  Please make sure your child applies sunscreen before coming to school. If you would like your child to reapply sunscreen, please send it with your child to school. They should be able to apply sunscreen independently.

  • Shoes:  Must be worn at all times and may get wet.

  • Water Bottle: Please bring a water bottle labeled with your name. There is a water station that will be used to refill water bottles.

  • Additional items:  Towels, sunglasses and hats are optional, but your child must be responsible for them. We recommend sending a simple bag or drawstring backpack that your child can use to carry their items.

Book bags: Please locate your child’s book bag and return next week. Please let me know if you are unable to find their book bag.

Math Homework: You will find a piece of string in your child’s home folder today. Please cut this string to the length of your child when they were born! If you don’t have or remember that information, no worries, an estimate will do!

Library Books: Please send any library books you still have at home with your child. Volunteers will be working on reshelving the books next week and we can collect any funds for books that were lost.

Year Books: You are still able to order yearbooks if you missed the opportunity. https://www.geskusphoto.com/yearbookorders and type the name of our school and then proceed with ordering.

Summer Learning Opportunities: Here are some resources for summer learning from the Kent ISD along with different summer programs for children.

WEEK AT A GLANCE

Literacy Workshop

Narrative Writing: We have been studying mentor texts and trying to included all the great things we’ve noticed in them

  • unchecked

    Clues about the setting

  • unchecked

    Action!

  • unchecked

Lots of details about the character (in the pictures too!)

  • unchecked

Making a pattern (he worried about…. he worried about…. he worried about….)

Reading: We practiced giving a detailed retell of our reading and adding character feelings to get stronger in talking about our books for second grade.

Phonics: We are continuing to build our knowledge of “r-controlled vowels.” We have officially learned all our first grade snap words and are practicing all 104 of them!

Math

This week we had so much fun building gliders and measuring how far our gliders could fly! We collected lots of flight data and compared our results. We even graphed our data as a class to see what the most common flight distance was! Next week we will continue to work on measurement and data with graphing our heights from babies to now!

We discussed how it’s important not to just breeze past these words, but to stop and think about what these words actually mean.  We’ve also been getting to know some common phonograms that end in blends ( -ump, -ock, -ash, -unk, -ack, -uck, -ing, -ish ) Knowing these endings helps us to recognize the ending as a “part” and not just isolated sounds.
