Summer Learning Opportunities: Here are some resources for summer learning from the Kent ISD along with different summer programs for children.

WEEK AT A GLANCE

Literacy Workshop

Narrative Writing: We started our series book writing unit this week. This is by far my FAVORITE writing unit in first grade. The kids had fun making up their own fictional characters and settings for them. We reminded ourselves that to get started on a book writers touch and tell, sketch, and then write. We also worked on brainstorming various adventures our characters could have and the trouble they  could get into during them.

Reading: We have been going on reading adventures and are learning comprehension strategies we can use every time we read a book. So far we’ve been getting ready for our reading adventures by taking a sneak peek by previewing a story to discover where we’ll go and what we’ll do.

Phonics: We started our last word study unit that focuses on “R-Controlled Vowels” (or, er, ir, ur, ar). So far we’ve been studying the different sounds that -er, -ar, and -or make. We also learned some new snap words:

over, their, under, want, were

Math

This week our Hansel and Gretel connections decided to add a few amenities to their paths in the woods: fences, benches, flowerpots, and garbage cans. Each of these objects had different lengths: fences (10 units), benches (5 units), garbage cans (2 units), and flower pots (1 unit). Students had multiple opportunities to design paths of different lengths and to compute the lengths of the path sections presented to them. We then played a game involving a path of 120 steps long. Students spun to make jumps of 1, 2, 5, or 10 and later 20 or 30, to race from one end of the path to the other. This game allowed students to practice adding and subtracting 2-digit numbers on a number line.

* The game is coming home with them today! I hope you get a chance to play over the weekend!

Science
I am sure you have heard about the latest addition to our classroom. We now have a tank of fiddler crabs for us to study and observe during our last science unit! We will look at different plant and animal traits over the last month of the school year!

WEEK AT A GLANCE ELA : Not only are our nonfiction texts full of longer and harder words, but also expert words that pertain to the topic we’re reading about. We discussed how it’s important not to just breeze past these words, but to stop and think about what these words actually mean.  We’ve also been getting to know some common phonograms that end in blends ( -ump, -ock, -ash, -unk, -ack, -uck, -ing, -ish ) Knowing these endings helps us to recognize the ending as a “part” and not just isolated sounds.
