Celebration Cinema Field Trip: Remember, if you’re planning on attending this trip as an adult you will need to purchase tickets/popcorn by May 3. Parent tickets are $6 and the drink/popcorn combo is $5. You can select only a movie ticket or ticket/combo for $11. You can send in cash or a check made out to Lakeside Elementary with your child or drop it off in the office! Thanks!

Prodigy: I'm excited to share that we are using Prodigy in class for standards-aligned practice in math during our STEM Fridays.

To help your child log in and practice at home:

1. Go to prodigygame.com and select 'Play Now' in the top-right corner

2. Enter your child's username and password: (in your child's home folder today)

Summer Learning Opportunities: Here are some resources for summer learning from the Kent ISD along with different summer programs for children.

WEEK AT A GLANCE

Literacy Workshop

Opinion Writing: We continued to work on our book reviews - focusing on creating a “sneak peek” that introduces our characters, tells the situation and asks a question at the end.

Reading/Phonics: We completed our vowel team toolboxes! Here are the vowel teams we’ve been using-

EA, AI, OA, EE, AY, OY, OI, EW, UE, OO, OU, OW, AW AU, IGH

Hold your child accountable for recognizing these in the reading and using them in their writing to make vowels long.

Math: This week we have continued to help Hansel and Gretel mark paths around their house with breadcrumbs, pinecones, and pebbles. Each marker has a different value, 1, 5, or 10, and we’ve been working on counting forward and backward from any number by 1’s, 5’s, and 10’s! Since our paths were such a success we’ve added details to our paths in the form of flower pots, benches, and fences. These additions are also measured in 1’s, 5’s, and 10’s, so we’ve had to measure parts of our path to know how many of these objects we need along our trail! You can practice at home by challenging your student to count forward and backward from a random number by 1’s, 5’s, and 10’s!

SEL - Solving Problems: In this week’s lesson, your child will show what they’ve learned about solving problems and suggest ways characters in a comic can apologize, ask for what they need to solve the problem, and make amends.
Try This at Home: Help your child practice their problem-solving skills at home. Reinforce the importance of apologizing, asking for what they want or need, and finding a way to make amends when they encounter a problem.

WEEK AT A GLANCE ELA : Not only are our nonfiction texts full of longer and harder words, but also expert words that pertain to the topic we’re reading about. We discussed how it’s important not to just breeze past these words, but to stop and think about what these words actually mean.  We’ve also been getting to know some common phonograms that end in blends ( -ump, -ock, -ash, -unk, -ack, -uck, -ing, -ish ) Knowing these endings helps us to recognize the ending as a “part” and not just isolated sounds.
