WEEK AT A GLANCE

Literacy Workshop

Opinion Writing: We started to think of topics for our reviews. We’re writing about the best toys, movies, games, restaurants, vacations, cities, and more! We’ve discussed that to convince readers of our opinion:

  • unchecked

We need to speak to readers about the important information (where? When? what?)

Ask your child what topic they tried to convince their reader of…

Reading/Phonics: We’ve continued to focus on the vowel teams we’ve learned; paying special attention to the vowel teams OU and OW this week. We practiced using snap words that we’re familiar with to make new words with these vowel teams. This week we used /out/ to make: shout, spout, pout, about, and snout. We use /down/ to make: town, frown, brown, crown, and clown. We then tried to pay special attention that we were getting these sounds right in our own writing, as well. We also focused on slowing down when we get to longer, harder words and breaking them apart into smaller pieces.

Math: We continued to focus on addition and subtraction story problems and fact strategies to 20. We made double-flap dot cards and picture cards and wrote sets of fact family equations and story problems to match. We also modeled and solved addition combinations to 20 on our number racks, identifying which strategies work easier for different combinations.

WEEK AT A GLANCE ELA : Not only are our nonfiction texts full of longer and harder words, but also expert words that pertain to the topic we’re reading about. We discussed how it’s important not to just breeze past these words, but to stop and think about what these words actually mean.  We’ve also been getting to know some common phonograms that end in blends ( -ump, -ock, -ash, -unk, -ack, -uck, -ing, -ish ) Knowing these endings helps us to recognize the ending as a “part” and not just isolated sounds.
