IMPORTANT INFORMATION

Mrs. Buzalski: Our dear Mrs. B is retiring this school year. She has been at Lakeside since some of the staff here attended Lakeside as students! To say she’s near and dear to our hearts in an understatement. Her last day at Lakeside will be March 27.

As a building, we have organized ways to show Mrs. B our love and appreciation on each day of her last week at Lakeside. First graders are asked to bring a flower from home to give Mrs. B on the morning of Monday, March 25. Students will line up in their arrival lines with their flowers and we will pick them up at 8:15 from our 1st grade door and  walk to the office to hand deliver the 22 flowers from our class.

Celebration Cinema Field Trip: On Friday, May 17 we will be traveling to Celebration Cinema for a field trip. Recently the first grade teachers were contacted by the Director of Group and Programming Events at Celebration Cinema inquiring for permission to take some photos during our visit to use for promotion. The photos would be used on their social platforms, the Celebration Cinema website, and print marketing. If you would prefer that your child not be included in any of these photos for Celebration Cinema, please contact me by March 28.

Additionally, for our field trip on May 17 from 8:30-10:50, we can have as many parents join as possible, so please fill out this form if you plan to attend. If you are planning to attend this trip as a parent then you will need to purchase tickets/popcorn in advance. Parent tickets are $6 and the drink/popcorn combo is $5. You can select only a movie ticket or ticket/combo for $11. You can send in cash or a check made out to Lakeside Elementary with your child or drop it off in the office! Thanks!

Running Club: Get ready to be Part of the Pride! Running Club will be starting April 9 when we return from Spring Break. Please click here for all of the fun information!

WEEK AT A GLANCE

Literacy Workshop

Opinion Writing: We spent the week finishing up our reviews. We’ll work on categorizing them with our peer reviews to make a class anthology of various types of reviews.

Reading/Phonics: Rasheed has blueprints for something, but we’re not quite sure what they’re for….YET! We need to finish learning about all the vowel teams first. We learned about the vowel teams OY and OI and how these two vowel teams make the same sound. OY is often found at the end of words (like /boy/) and OI is often found in the middle of words (like /coin/). Of course, like all phonetics, there are always words that are exceptions! We’ve also been working on understanding the texts that we’re reading and making sure we go back and reread if things don’t make sense.

Math: This week we revisited the measurement activities from the end of Unit 4. We learned about two more penguins (Emperor and Little Blue) and had opportunities to measure and compare these penguins’ height, as well as order two-digit numbers and un inequality signs. The end of the week was devoted to counting by 2s as students created a pair of identical paper penguins of one of the four species we’ve learned about this year (Rockhopper, King, Emperor, and Little Blue). We assembled a class chart and discussed the patterns we saw.

WEEK AT A GLANCE ELA : Not only are our nonfiction texts full of longer and harder words, but also expert words that pertain to the topic we’re reading about. We discussed how it’s important not to just breeze past these words, but to stop and think about what these words actually mean.  We’ve also been getting to know some common phonograms that end in blends ( -ump, -ock, -ash, -unk, -ack, -uck, -ing, -ish ) Knowing these endings helps us to recognize the ending as a “part” and not just isolated sounds.
