IMPORTANT INFORMATION

Shoebox Collections: For writing next week, I’m asking that each child bring in their own “collection” of something. This collection should be able to be stored neatly in a shoebox or bag that fits inside of their locker and should be anywhere between 4-6 objects. This could entail anything from shells, rocks, stickers, bracelets, trolls, baseball cards, etc. (for example: my own daughter brought in 6 Paw Patrol figures). We will be using these collections for the first couple of weeks in our opinion writing unit. Please have your child bring this collection by Wednesday, February 14. Let your child know that they can store it in their locker until Mrs. Faris asks them to bring it into the classroom ;o)

Valentines Day: You can find a link to our class list here if your child would like to use it to assign valentines. We have 23 students in our class. We will be decorating boxes in the classroom prior to the Valentines Day party.

WEEK AT A GLANCE

ELA: Our mini-lessons focused a lot on the phonetics of reading. A lot of emphasis was placed on finding word parts and snap words that can help us read longer words. We also reviewed contractions and how they are shortened versions of two words. We had a Tournament of Games to help kids play around with letters to make words and review the different ways that words work.

We focused a lot on editing and revising our All About book to get them ready for publishing. We will officially bind our finished products next week and take our On  Demand (for the report card) on Tuesday.

Math: This week students were introduced to nets. These are flat arrangements of squares and triangles that can be formed into cubes and square pyramids. We also engaged in a project in which students created nine-patch mini-quilts by composing square quilt blocks into larger squares.

SEL Lesson: How to Say the Problem - In this week’s lesson, your child will learn how to state a problem in a respectful way, without blame or name calling. They’ll practice identifying problems and then state the problem respectfully.
Try This at Home: Children may be tempted to blame others when they’re upset about something. Encourage your child to avoid blame by describing what happened without focusing on who is at fault.

WEEK AT A GLANCE ELA : Not only are our nonfiction texts full of longer and harder words, but also expert words that pertain to the topic we’re reading about. We discussed how it’s important not to just breeze past these words, but to stop and think about what these words actually mean.  We’ve also been getting to know some common phonograms that end in blends ( -ump, -ock, -ash, -unk, -ack, -uck, -ing, -ish ) Knowing these endings helps us to recognize the ending as a “part” and not just isolated sounds.
