WEEK AT A GLANCE

ELA: We started new units this week in all our ELA content areas.

In reading and phonics we’ve been discovering vowel teams and figuring out the sounds they make when we find them in words together. The two we focused on this week were EA and EE. We discovered that they make the long E sound. Help point this out to your child as you read together at home.

We’ve also been reviewing the Tools for Solving Hard Words and Word Detectives Take a Closer Look strategies we were introduced to earlier this year. We’ve been focusing on not just trying ONE of these strategies but MANY of these strategies until we get the word right!

New snap words this week: away, easy,

In writing we wrote our INFORMATIONAL ON DEMAND which will help me to evaluate your child’s writing in this genre. We started to explore and judge the collections we brought to get our minds ready for expressing our opinions.

MATH: This week students focused on fractions. Students folded and cut paper to decompose shapes and played a bingo game that explored halves, fourths, and thirds. Students are developing an understanding of fractions as parts of a whole.

SEL: Was It an Accident? - In this week’s lesson, your child learned helpful ways to respond to a problem caused by accident. They practiced phrases for apologizing: "I’m sorry. It was an accident. Are you okay? How can I help?"

Try This at Home: When accidents occur at home, take time to apologize and encourage your child to do the same, using the new phrases they learned at school this week.

WEEK AT A GLANCE ELA : Not only are our nonfiction texts full of longer and harder words, but also expert words that pertain to the topic we’re reading about. We discussed how it’s important not to just breeze past these words, but to stop and think about what these words actually mean.  We’ve also been getting to know some common phonograms that end in blends ( -ump, -ock, -ash, -unk, -ack, -uck, -ing, -ish ) Knowing these endings helps us to recognize the ending as a “part” and not just isolated sounds.
