The Case of Words in Disguise: We are becoming experts at contractions and using an apostrophe to combine two words into one smaller word! (I am, I’m)

IMPORTANT NOTES
Winter Gear: It is a great idea to start helping your child build independence in getting on their winter gear. Encourage them to zip their own jackets, put on their own mittens, etc at home.

Math Home Connection:  The Unit 3 Home Connections for math will be sent home with your child in their Home Folders today. 

WEEK AT A GLANCE

Reading/Phonics: We received our last mission to help us become expert word detectives and continued to work on building our knowledge of:

  • The Case of the Twin Letters: Using double consonants in the middle of the word to help us break words apart.

  • The Case of the Sticky Letters: Looking at THREE consonants (trigraphs) at the beginnings of words

  • The Case of Words in Disguise: We are becoming experts at contractions and using an apostrophe to combine two words into one smaller word! (I am, I’m)

  • The Case of Tracking Down the Look-Alike Word Parts: When a word is really tough, word detectives think about EVERY word they know to track down the parts that look alike. 


Writing: We finished our How-To books and published them this week. We celebrated by reading our classmates’ published pieces. We will be moving on in our nonfiction writing to explore the genre of All About Chapter Books.


Math: this week we focused on exploring equations. We wrote addition expressions and compared equations. Then we completed activities that highlight the “difference model” of subtraction. 

Science: We just started learning about the moon. We have started exploring the different shapes of the moon, finding patterns and making predictions.

First Grade - Week of October 23

Narrative Writing Celebration IMPORTANT INFORMATION Field Trips: We will be taking five field trips this year, GRPS Planetarium, Forest Hills Performing Arts Center, Recycling Center, Van Andel Institute, and the Celebration Cinema IMAX. If you would like to volunteer to drive for any of the field trips, please complete this sign-up.  All parents will have the opportunity to join us on May 17th for the Celebration Cinema field trip. I will send out a separate form for this field trip in the spring. Our first field trip will be to the Grand Rapids Public Museum’s Planetarium on the morning of November 7. Please be sure that you’ve filled out a volunteer consent form if you plan on driving for this field trip.
