WEEK AT A GLANCE

Jupiter Presentation: We were so fortunate to have a real life engineer (& dad of one of our first graders) present information all about how his team of hundreds at NASA helped construct, launch, and guide a space probe (Juno) to Jupiter. Below are some pictures from his presentation.

Reading: We’ve been studying how to get Super Smart about Nonfiction Topics. We’ve learned that readers of nonfiction text:

Take a Sneak Peek to start learning

  • unchecked

    Stop and study each page

  • unchecked

    Guess what might come next

  • unchecked

    Chat about what’s happening

Word Study: We’ve been studying endings of words. We learned that the ending /-ed/ makes three sounds /t/ /d/ /id/.  We also learned that blends can come at the end of words too, and that those can be different than the ones found at the beginning of words.

Writing: We’ve been learning various ways to teach our readers–

  • unchecked

Think about questions my readers might have

  • unchecked

Writing in “Twin Sentences” (ex: Runners wear sneakers. Sneakers protect your feet from getting hurt.

  • unchecked

Teach with Pictures and Words (zoom in, labels, arrows)

  • unchecked

Using Number, size, color and shape words

Math: This week students were introduced to our next module in Unit 4. This module will explore open number lines in multiples of 5s and 10s. Students helped guide two frogs (Tad and Polli) along the number line to help them catch a yummy fly! These frogs raced forward and backwards along the number line in distances of 10. We will continue to work on this with 5s when we get back from winter break.

IMPORTANT NOTES

Math Home Connection: January’s Home Connection is in your child's Home Folder today. Remember this is simply a way for your child to practice what they’re learning at school at home. Take the time to sit with your child and have them show you what they’re learning in math!

Kindness Bingo is in home folders today!

WEEK AT A GLANCE ELA : Not only are our nonfiction texts full of longer and harder words, but also expert words that pertain to the topic we’re reading about. We discussed how it’s important not to just breeze past these words, but to stop and think about what these words actually mean.  We’ve also been getting to know some common phonograms that end in blends ( -ump, -ock, -ash, -unk, -ack, -uck, -ing, -ish ) Knowing these endings helps us to recognize the ending as a “part” and not just isolated sounds.
