WEEK AT A GLANCE

Reading/Phonics: The SSDA (Super Secret Detective Agency) is at it again! We have received a new set of missions to help us become expert word detectives. We have worked on:

  • The Case of the Twin Letters: Using double consonants in the middle of the word to help us break words apart.

  • The Case of the Sticky Letters: Looking at THREE consonants (trigraphs) at the beginnings of words

  • The Case of Words in Disguise: We are becoming experts at contractions and using an apostrophe to combine two words into one smaller word! (I am, I’m)

Math: In number corner this month we have been working with fractions (whole, half, fourth) and telling time to the hour. We have also been looking at the tens place and ones place and knowing the value of each. This has been important as we’ve been building teen numbers during math, adding a one digit and two-digit number together, and using strategies to add with sums to 20!

Writing:  We worked on writing introductions and conclusions. We’ve also been brainstorming how we can turn our How-To books into a series to “gift to others.” Some of our series include “How-To Play Sports”, “How-To Draw”, “How-To Make Lunches” etc.

SEL Lesson - Noticing Clues: In this week’s lesson, your child will show that they can use body language and context clues to figure out how someone is feeling. They’ll also show that they know ways to help themselves feel calm when they encounter strong feelings.

Try This at Home: Ask your child to tell you some ways they’ve learned to feel calm when they get upset. Have them teach you how to use slow counting to feel calm.

WEEK AT A GLANCE ELA : Not only are our nonfiction texts full of longer and harder words, but also expert words that pertain to the topic we’re reading about. We discussed how it’s important not to just breeze past these words, but to stop and think about what these words actually mean.  We’ve also been getting to know some common phonograms that end in blends ( -ump, -ock, -ash, -unk, -ack, -uck, -ing, -ish ) Knowing these endings helps us to recognize the ending as a “part” and not just isolated sounds.
