WEEK AT A GLANCE
Phonics: Now that we know our first 11 first grade snap words (and 54 kindergarten snap words) we’ve been focusing on how we can use these words to read and write zillions of other words. Help your child pick up on these noticings in their reading and writing at home.
Snap Words: but, his, yes, then, then, said, saw, say, run, us, let
Reading: We finished our very first reading unit this week! Wow! To end the unit we celebrated all the habits we’ve formed as readers from week 1 all the way to week 6. These habits are displayed in the hallway outside of our classroom. We can’t wait for you to see them during parent teacher conferences.
Writing: We are getting so close to publishing our very first book as first graders! This is such an exciting time. Next week students will select their choice for book publishing and work on fixing and fancying that writing up to include all the wonderful things we saw our mentor author (George McClemonts) do in his writing. \
Math: We started our new math unit which focuses on adding numbers within 20. We’ve been using dominoes as a tool to help us with this skill. Dominos are a great tool to help students subitize numbers. This skill is the beginning of students using other strategies other than counting by 1s which assists students in building better fact fluency. We also practiced comparing our totals by using terms like greater than, less than, and equal to with their appropriate math symbol.
Social/Emotional Learning: In this week’s lesson, your child will reflect on different skills they’ve learned and talk about how practice and continued effort helped them get better.
Try This at Home: Talk with your child about different tasks and skills they have learned to do by themselves at home, for example, making their bed, getting themselves dressed, etc. Remind them that it took time and practice to get better at these things.
- Students should plan on slipping on costumes over their clothes. Students need to do this independently.
- Please remember no full face masks, face paint, make-up, blood, or weapons.
