First Grade - Week of October 2

Hearts of Gold Friday

IMPORTANT NOTES

Kids Have Rights: KHR teaches that all kids have body safety rights that they are entitled to no matter what. Knowledge and understanding of these rights, empowers kids to help keep themselves safe.
A KHR Educator will be visiting our classroom on Monday, October 9.

Parent Teacher Conferences: Fall in-person conferences are scheduled for Thursday, October 19 and Tuesday, October 24. A blast from Skyward was sent out last week with a link to schedule your child’s parent teacher conference. This link will close October 11.

Halloween: On Tuesday, October 31, please send your child to school dressed in regular school clothes, as our celebration will be held in the afternoon. The school parade will take place outside at 2:30. Parties will immediately follow.

Below are some reminders as you start thinking about costumes.
      • Students should plan on slipping on costumes over their clothes. Students need to do this independently.
      • Please remember no full face masks, face paint, make-up, blood, or weapons.

WEEK AT A GLANCE

Phonics: Now that we know our first 11 first grade snap words (and 54 kindergarten snap words) we’ve been focusing on how we can use these words to read and write zillions of other words. Help your child pick up on these noticings in their reading and writing at home.
Snap Words: but, his, yes, then, then, said, saw, say, run, us, let

Reading: We finished our very first reading unit this week! Wow! To end the unit we celebrated all the habits we’ve formed as readers from week 1 all the way to week 6. These habits are displayed in the hallway outside of our classroom. We can’t wait for you to see them during parent teacher conferences.

Writing: We are getting so close to publishing our very first book as first graders! This is such an exciting time. Next week students will select their choice for book publishing and work on fixing and fancying that writing up to include all the wonderful things we saw our mentor author (George McClemonts) do in his writing. \
                    This includes:
          • Exact Actions
          • Ellipses
          • Pop Out Words
** If anyone would like to come in and volunteer to help out with our first publishing day feel free to email me. It would be on Friday (October 13). It will probably only be about 45 minutes. Being familiar with or willing to learn how to use a binding machine from the 1980s is helpful :o)

Math: We started our new math unit which focuses on adding numbers within 20. We’ve been using dominoes as a tool to help us with this skill. Dominos are a great tool to help students subitize numbers. This skill is the beginning of students using other strategies other than counting by 1s which assists students in building better fact fluency. We also practiced comparing our totals by using terms like greater than, less than, and equal to with their appropriate math symbol.

Social/Emotional Learning: In this week’s lesson, your child will reflect on different skills they’ve learned and talk about how practice and continued effort helped them get better.

Try This at Home: Talk with your child about different tasks and skills they have learned to do by themselves at home, for example, making their bed, getting themselves dressed, etc. Remind them that it took time and practice to get better at these things.

WEEK AT A GLANCE ELA : Not only are our nonfiction texts full of longer and harder words, but also expert words that pertain to the topic we’re reading about. We discussed how it’s important not to just breeze past these words, but to stop and think about what these words actually mean.  We’ve also been getting to know some common phonograms that end in blends ( -ump, -ock, -ash, -unk, -ack, -uck, -ing, -ish ) Knowing these endings helps us to recognize the ending as a “part” and not just isolated sounds.
