First Grade - Week of October 16

We had a wonderful surprise today from the East Grand Rapids Schools Foundation! I was granted a check for STEAM in Literacy. I can not wait to start STEAM Fridays by introducing the students to 3Doodle Pens and Keva Blocks to explore engineering within Literacy.

IMPORTANT NOTES

Parent Teacher Conferences: It was so good to see so many of you last night. I’m looking forward to seeing the rest of you during Fall in-person conferences on Tuesday, October 24. Here is the schedule for conferences. Please let me know if something comes up and you need to make adjustments to your time.

Halloween: On Tuesday, October 31, please send your child to school dressed in regular school clothes, as our celebration will be held in the afternoon. The school parade will take place outside at 2:15. Parties will immediately follow. Below are some reminders as you start thinking about costumes.

  • Students should plan on slipping on costumes over their clothes.  Students need to do this independently.

  • Please remember no full face masks, face paint, make-up, blood, or weapons.

WEEK AT A GLANCE

ELA: We wrapped up our units today in ELA. We will have our writing celebration on Monday and share our amazing Narrative stories. We will continue to study blends and digraphs throughout the year. On Monday, we will become WORD DETECTIVES and study new reading strategies and explore the case of the silent-e.

Math: This week we focused on developing addition strategies, particularly doubling and counting on to solve combinations within 12. Students worked with their number racks to visualize numbers and learned games in which they added and recorded their results. Students who are still counting by 1s to add are encouraged to count on instead and students who have moved beyond counting by 1s are encouraged to develop strategies that make use of well-known facts to solve less familiar combinations.

SEL Lesson: In this week’s lesson, your child will show what they’ve learned about paying attention, managing distractions, and practicing as they learn to draw Pepito, a character from Second Step Elementary animated videos.

Try This at Home: Ask your child to tell you about their experience learning to draw Pepito. Encourage them to draw a family portrait with Pepito in it as a way to keep practicing.

WEEK AT A GLANCE ELA : Not only are our nonfiction texts full of longer and harder words, but also expert words that pertain to the topic we’re reading about. We discussed how it’s important not to just breeze past these words, but to stop and think about what these words actually mean.  We’ve also been getting to know some common phonograms that end in blends ( -ump, -ock, -ash, -unk, -ack, -uck, -ing, -ish ) Knowing these endings helps us to recognize the ending as a “part” and not just isolated sounds.
