First Grade - Week of October 9

New Stickers for Wonder Journals

IMPORTANT NOTES

Parent Teacher Conferences: Fall in-person conferences are scheduled for Thursday, October 19 and Tuesday, October 24. Here is the schedule for conferences. Please let me know if something comes up and you need to make adjustments to your time.

Halloween: On Tuesday, October 31, please send your child to school dressed in regular school clothes, as our celebration will be held in the afternoon. The school parade will take place outside at 2:30. Parties will immediately follow. Below are some reminders as you start thinking about costumes.

  • Students should plan on slipping on costumes over their clothes.  Students need to do this independently.

  • Please remember no full face masks, face paint, make-up, blood, or weapons.

WEEK AT A GLANCE

Phonics: We used snap words in our reading this week to read and write a zillion other words.

Writing: We spent the week revising and editing our favorite writing pieces. We checked our writing for:

  • unchecked

Beginnings that tell who, what, when and where

  • unchecked

    Transition words

  • unchecked

Writing across three or more pages

  • unchecked

Endings that stay in the moment

  • unchecked

Spelling, use of capitals/lowercase letter appropriately, and punctuation

We can’t wait to publish on Monday!

Math: This week we focused on addition and subtraction strategies for solving for an unknown number. We used double-flap cards to discover the relationship between addition and subtraction, as well as the commutative property (the change in the order of numbers being added does not affect the sum). In this unit the equal sign is described as a symbol that shows a relationship between two quantities that have the same value (rather than “the answer”). Please reinforce this at home when you work with your child on their Home Connection pages.

WEEK AT A GLANCE ELA : Not only are our nonfiction texts full of longer and harder words, but also expert words that pertain to the topic we’re reading about. We discussed how it’s important not to just breeze past these words, but to stop and think about what these words actually mean.  We’ve also been getting to know some common phonograms that end in blends ( -ump, -ock, -ash, -unk, -ack, -uck, -ing, -ish ) Knowing these endings helps us to recognize the ending as a “part” and not just isolated sounds.
