First Grade - Week of September 4 (Parent/Guardian Night Information)

Good afternoon,

Thank you for visiting our classroom on Wednesday to learn about the world of first grade at Lakeside! I am so appreciative of your time and that you share your children with me each day! We have such a wonderful group, and I can’t wait to see how we continue to learn and grow together.

Reading: We have been continuing to build good habits as readers. This week we added the following habits:

  • Reading More and More and keeping track of books we read with tally marks

  • Setting goals to read more than yesterday

Anchor chart of these habits will be sent home with your child in their “Reading Homework Bag” on Monday with their “just right” books (more on this below).

Writing: We are continuing to work on Small Moment writing. These are everyday moments from our life (big or small). We’re focusing on not writing about our WHOLE day (a watermelon story) and instead choosing one small moment from the day (a seed from the watermelon) and stretching that moment out with lots of detail over lots of pages.

Word Study: We continued to use our names this week to study the ways letters and sounds work together. We have also been paying special attention to our formation of letters.

Math: We got to experience our first DECADE DAY on the 10th day of school this week! Every ten days we will continue to celebrate a new decade to reinforce the importance of ten as mathematicians. We have been practicing visualizing numbers with ten-frame flashes and making them quickly on our self-made number racks. We’ve also been practicing writing numbers and correcting common reversals.

OTHER NOTES

ROAR Fundraiser: Let’s get ready to ROAR!  Your Lakeside PTO will be hosting its ONE fundraiser of the year, ROAR!, this September 22nd, 6-9pm at the Nyal Deems’ Residence, 701 Laurel Circle, EGR.

At this adult only event, there will be both silent and live auctions that include exciting and wonderful items and experiences as well as a wine pull!  Each ticket includes a large variety of amazing hors d'oeuvres catered by EGR Eats and a Lakeside “Kindness Counts” color changing cup to enjoy beverages at the cash bar featuring wine, beer and seltzers.

Last Friday, the PTO included a few informational fliers about tickets and donations in student’s Friday folders. Watch this week for “teasers” highlighting some of our biggest auction items. Please take a look if you get a chance, we don’t want you to miss out!

Please join us for this fun event to meet up with old and new friends!

Sincerely,

The Lakeside PTO Board and ROAR! Committee

Reading Homework Folder: On Monday, your child will begin to take home their Reading Homework Folder with a “just right” book from our classroom to practice reading strategies at home. You won’t miss it! It’s a HUGE black bag. Please refer to the anchor chart inside the bag to practice strategies we're working on at home. Your child can return this to school every morning to switch out books. If you didn't get to the book or finish it, keep it for another night. They will leave these bookbags at school on Friday (because no homework on the weekends!)

WEEK AT A GLANCE ELA : Not only are our nonfiction texts full of longer and harder words, but also expert words that pertain to the topic we’re reading about. We discussed how it’s important not to just breeze past these words, but to stop and think about what these words actually mean.  We’ve also been getting to know some common phonograms that end in blends ( -ump, -ock, -ash, -unk, -ack, -uck, -ing, -ish ) Knowing these endings helps us to recognize the ending as a “part” and not just isolated sounds.
