First Week in First Grade

Hello families,

What a great first week it has been getting to know your children! We have been practicing various classroom procedures, discussing components of having a growth mindset, transitioning to specials and lunch, and fitting in a little review of reading, writing, and math along the way. Wow! That’s quite a lot for one week! No wonder we all feel tired! One highlight from the week was learning about the spotless giraffe that was born in Tennessee!

Every Friday you will receive an email from me giving the latest news in our first grade classroom.

MARK YOUR CALENDAR

September 4: NO SCHOOL

A FEW THINGS

Lunch: https://grps.nutrislice.com/menu/east-grand-rapids

Learning Commons:  If you would like to volunteer to help during our learning commons time on Thursdays from 1:35 - 2:00, please sign up here.

Volunteer Support Form: If you would like to volunteer in our classroom or drive on any of our field trips, please make sure you have filled out this form.

Shoes: Please make sure that your child is wearing shoes that they can independently get on and off to school. This includes tie shoes if your child cannot tie them on their own.

Navy Blue Folder: Every Friday your child will carry their “Home Folder” home with them in their backpacks. Usually really important information from the office is sent home on Fridays. This is a folder that children will put some of the work they complete during the week at school, as well.

Parent Information Night: I cannot wait to explain more in depth many of the happenings that occur in our classroom from day to day. Please save the date: Wednesday, September 6 from 6:45 - 7:30

I cannot express enough how thankful I am for all of you. You have clearly helped your children prepare so well for the transition back to school. Thank you for trusting me with their care this school year. It’s really going to be a great one!

If you have any questions, concerns, or comments, please feel free to email me at kfaris@egrsp.org

Enjoy your weekend and get some rest! You and your child deserve it!

Best,

Kailey Faris

WEEK AT A GLANCE ELA : Not only are our nonfiction texts full of longer and harder words, but also expert words that pertain to the topic we’re reading about. We discussed how it’s important not to just breeze past these words, but to stop and think about what these words actually mean.  We’ve also been getting to know some common phonograms that end in blends ( -ump, -ock, -ash, -unk, -ack, -uck, -ing, -ish ) Knowing these endings helps us to recognize the ending as a “part” and not just isolated sounds.
