First Grade - Week of August 28

 Hello Families,

What a fantastic week. Our procedures are becoming more solid day by day and we’ve finally gotten to dive into our curriculum...which I LOVE!

Reading: We have been practicing the behaviors of Avid Readers like we learned in Kindergarten. This week we also learned that readers have habits just like we have habits like brushing our teeth. The habits we discussed this week are:

  • Taking a sneak peek

  • Checking our sneak peek

  • Doing something at the end of our books

**ask your reader to explain these habits they’re working on at home!

Writing: We have been busy, busy, busy building tools to help us generate ideas for our small moment writing unit. We have read various mentor texts to help us along.

**ask your child what ideas they’ve come up with to write about! As you enjoy your holiday weekend, point out small moments your child has that might make great stories next week.

Word Study: We met our new class mascot named RASHEED! We are learning that first graders do not just glance at words. NO! They use new eyes and ears to really STUDY the words around them. We have been practicing this by using the most important words in the world...our NAMES! Ask your child what they notice about the letters and sounds in their name.

Math: This week we worked on counting by 1s, 2s, and 5s by observing twin pop sticks and tally marks. We celebrated today with our own Twin POPS!

WEEK AT A GLANCE ELA : Not only are our nonfiction texts full of longer and harder words, but also expert words that pertain to the topic we’re reading about. We discussed how it’s important not to just breeze past these words, but to stop and think about what these words actually mean.  We’ve also been getting to know some common phonograms that end in blends ( -ump, -ock, -ash, -unk, -ack, -uck, -ing, -ish ) Knowing these endings helps us to recognize the ending as a “part” and not just isolated sounds.
