First Grade - Week of September 11

Dear Families,

We made it through our first full week of school! The kids did a great job but I could tell we were a little extra tired today! I hope everyone has a wonderful and restful weekend. :)

Wonder Journals! We made our first entry in our wonder journal.

IMPORTANT NOTES

Map Testing: We will be taking our MAP Test on Tuesday, September 19. This is a test on the computer that measures your child’s academic growth throughout the year.

Book Bags:  Hopefully your child has brought home their book bag this week and read the book inside. It is your child’s responsibility to pack their book bag each day with a “just right” book from their bin. If the book seems easy, they may have practiced it a lot during reading that day. If it seems hard, they may have chosen a book they have not practiced yet. In your child’s Friday Home Folder tonight you will find one of our reading strategy charts that we have been working on in workshop! These are helpful phrases to help remind your reader of good habits that we work on in class.

As mentioned at Parent/Guardian Night, books should be returned every school day. I completely understand that some days you may need more than a day with a book or you just forget and that is completely fine!

Field TripsThe school pay link for first grade field trips is ready! Please click here to provide payment of $32 for your child’s field trips this school year. If you are unable to pay this school year please email me.

WEEK AT A GLANCE ELA : Not only are our nonfiction texts full of longer and harder words, but also expert words that pertain to the topic we’re reading about. We discussed how it’s important not to just breeze past these words, but to stop and think about what these words actually mean.  We’ve also been getting to know some common phonograms that end in blends ( -ump, -ock, -ash, -unk, -ack, -uck, -ing, -ish ) Knowing these endings helps us to recognize the ending as a “part” and not just isolated sounds.
