Grand Rapids Symphony’s Lollipop Concert: On Thursday, January 18 we will be heading to the Forest Hills Fine Arts Center for a Lollipop Concert performed by the Grand Rapids Symphony. This year we visit the world of Maestro Mouse and music from Dan Brown’s Wild Symphony. A great first orchestra experience, this lively program is designed for younger students (ages 4-7) and features Dan Brown’s book, Wild Symphony, as a way to connect music, visual art, movement, and social-emotional learning.
Please send your child with their booster on Thursday!
MLK Day Activities and Assembly: We will gathered as a school (Tuesday) to honor the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Our theme this year is “One small act of kindness can change the world.” The mentor text that was selected to educate students on our theme was A Good Deed Can Grow by Jennifer Bertram.
WEEK AT A GLANCE
Goal Setting: We read the book One Word for Kids: A Great Way to Have Your Best Year Ever by Jon Gordon and selected our ONE WORD we wanted to “live”in 2024. It was so inspiring to see all the different words they selected and proceeded to write about how they wanted to live these words out in their lives.
ELA: We are continuing to grow as readers of nonfiction text. We’ve noticed that nonfiction books have “expert words” that are often multiple syllables. To read these words successfully we practiced crashing parts of words together. We also studied that “sometimes at the end {of words} there is a blend” and that these blends look different than the blends at the beginning and middle of words. We practiced looking all the way through words to make sure each sound that we say looks right with the letters in the word. We also made our own display of common blends at the ends of words.

SEL Lesson: Ways to be Kind - In this week’s lesson, your child will learn and practice two ways they can be kind to others: asking, “Are you okay?” and offering to keep someone company.
Try This at Home: Help your child think of a family member or close friend who could use some company. Encourage them to ask the person, “Would you like some company?”
