IMPORTANT INFORMATION

Kabookie Week: Each year in February we have traditionally hosted a spirit week to accompany the festivities at the high school that same week for Kabookie Week. If you aren't familiar, Jimmy Gerken ("Kabookie") was an East Grand Rapids alumni who had a profound impact on our community for being an exceptional role model of kindness and friendship. Here is a video to learn a bit more about who Jimmy was. This year we are striving to educate our elementary and middle school students more about Jimmy's legacy, so we will host simple events during Kabookie Week, Feb. 5-9, that are themed around Jimmy.

Kabookie Friendship Week Celebration

  • Monday, February 5 - Popcorn snack (Jimmy’s favorite) provided and discussion over What do good friends do?

  • Tuesday, February 6 - The story of Kabookie through picture book and short video

  • Wednesday, February 7- Mix it up for lunch - to make a new friend!: Jimmy’s mantra was "It’s Okay… I'll still be your friend.”

  • Thursday, February 8 - Classroom friendship activity to celebrate kindness through friendship

  • Friday, February 9 - Wear East colors: Jimmy’s favorite team!

Valentines Day: You can find a link to our class list here if your child would like to use it to assign valentines. We have 23 students in our class. We will be decorating boxes in the classroom prior to the Valentines Day party.

WEEK AT A GLANCE

ELA

We’re been marking up our books to show all the things we’ve learned as nonfiction readers to the kindergarteners. Some of these things include -

  • unchecked

    Marking interesting parts

  • unchecked

Explaining and thinking about key words

  • unchecked

Figuring out how the book is organized

As writers we’ve been working on polishing up our nonfiction writing, making sure to include:

  • unchecked

    Catchy introductions

  • unchecked

    Comparisons

  • unchecked

Different types of pages to organize information in different ways

In phonics we are practicing reading across long, tough words from beginning to end. To do this, we’ve been karate chopping words to help us spell them part by part and making sure there is a vowel in each syllable!

Math: We started our next chapter of learning in mathematics. In this chapter we have been focusing on two-dimensional shapes, particularly those found in the pattern blocks (triangles, trapezoid, squares, hexagons, and rhombuses), plus rectangles. The work with shapes in this first module includes comparing, distinguishing defining attributes from non-defining, and developing problem-solving strategies. Students use pattern blocks to create composite shapes and solve puzzles, and practice drawing the shapes each day.

SEL Lesson: Offering Kind Acts

In this week’s lesson, your child learned and practiced two types of kind acts: offering to help someone and inviting someone to join.

Try This at Home: Help your child think of a kind act they can do for someone involving offering to help or inviting them to join. Support your child in carrying out the kind act.

WEEK AT A GLANCE ELA : Not only are our nonfiction texts full of longer and harder words, but also expert words that pertain to the topic we’re reading about. We discussed how it’s important not to just breeze past these words, but to stop and think about what these words actually mean.  We’ve also been getting to know some common phonograms that end in blends ( -ump, -ock, -ash, -unk, -ack, -uck, -ing, -ish ) Knowing these endings helps us to recognize the ending as a “part” and not just isolated sounds.
